I equate the formidable ambient music of SUN O))) to that of shifting tectonic plates, voluminous, amorphous, sound waves steadily wash over you clobbering you into submission. Engendering a kind of inner peace and tranquillity, consummate for contemplation, meditation or therapeutic purposes. Albeit, if you want instant gratification, or have a short attention span, they might not be your cup of tea?
Favorite track: Novæ.
Can we call this Sunn's pop album? Steve Albini's production makes their sludge sparkling clean and perfectly balanced. Eminently listenable, you could probably even put this on for people who don't get drone metal and they might dig it.
Favorite track: Troubled Air.

Not forever on earth; only a little while here.
Be it jade, it shatters.
Be it gold, it breaks.
Be it a quetzal feather, it tears apart.
Not forever on earth; only a little while here.
Like a painting, we will be erased.
Like a flower, we will dry up here on earth.
Like plumed vestments of the precious bird.
That precious bird with the agile neck,
We will come to an end.
He goes his way singing, offering flowers.
And his words rain down
Like jade and quetzal plumes.
Is this what pleases the Giver of Life?
Is that the only truth on earth?

What can I say that hasn't been already? An absolute mammoth of an album that's simultaneously forlorn and reassuring. It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but it's one of the most rewarding listens I've had the pleasure of experiencing. zirtonic
I am very particular when it comes to heavy sounds these days. I read a review of the band and this album in The Wire and decided to take a listen. What impresses me about Yob is their dedication to their craft. They have clearly been playing for many years. This sound does not come from fly by night acts but from musicians restless and looking to advance the craft. Yob deserve every accolade. Well done. Robert Elderton
